The magical wonders continue to brighten up the new creations of the world of animation. Walt Disney started off just like any other dreamer. We all know Walt Disney as the creator of the famous Disney Corporation and his animation contributions, like Mickey Mouse and Cinderella. Very few people take the time to actually learn who Walt was as an individual or how his life played out. As a young entrepreneur, Walt Disney influenced many creators, created a successful company, changes the eyes of the people, and lived a life of stories. His storyline continued to reflect his works and actions. The sources provide a majority of his life events and prove how a young boy became one of the best entrepreneurs in the world with wonderful ideas. Overall, he kept a strong eye on the prize; the prize being his dreams. Jody pulled a wad of cash out of her backpack and handed him a hundred-dollar bill. As Tommy started to protest, standing to dig money out of his jeans pocket, Jody picked up her soup spoon and brandished it threateningly. â€Å"I’ll get this.† Tommy sat back down. To Frederick, Jody said, â€Å"Keep the change.† â€Å"Oh, you are too generous,† Frederick gushed. He started backing away from the table in a half-bow. â€Å"And, Frederick,† Jody added, â€Å"Batman is far more over-accessorized than I am.† â€Å"I’m sorry you heard that,† Frederick said. â€Å"An overdeveloped sense of fashion will be my downfall.† He looked at Tommy. â€Å"You’re right, she’s going to break your heart.† â€Å"Have you seen Coit Tower?† she asked as they walked. â€Å"From a distance.† â€Å"Let’s go there. They had passed into a neighborhood of apartment houses with security bars on the windows and electric locks on the doors. Ahead, Jody saw waves of red heat signatures coming out of one dark doorway. They were too hot for one person and too cool to be a lightbulb. She focused and could hear men whispering. She suddenly remembered the phone call: â€Å"You’re not immortal. You can still be killed.† â€Å"Let’s cross the street, Tommy.† â€Å"Why?† â€Å"Just come on.† She grabbed his jacket and yanked him into the street. When they were on the opposite sidewalk, Tommy stopped and looked at her as if she had just hit him on the head with a spoon. â€Å"What was that all about?† She waved for him to be quiet. â€Å"Listen.† Someone behind them was laughing. Laughing loudly enough to be heard without Jody’s acute hearing. They both turned and looked back. A thin man dressed in black was standing under a street lamp a block away. â€Å"What’s so funny?† Tommy asked. Jody didn’t answer. She was staring at something that wasn’t there. There was no heat signature coming off the man in black. â€Å"Let’s go,† Jody said, hurrying Tommy up the street. As they passed the doorway across the street, Jody looked over and flipped a middle finger to the three toughs that had been waiting to ambush them. You guys are nothing, she thought. Laughter from the man in black still rang in her ears. It had been a long time since the vampire had heard the sound of his own laughter, and hearing it made him laugh all the louder. So the fledgling had found herself a minion. It had been a good idea to leave her hand partially exposed to the daylight. She had learned that lesson quickly. So many of them just wandered until daylight and burned to death, and he couldn’t even enjoy the show unless he wanted to join them in perdition. This one was interesting: so reluctant to give herself to the blood. They only seemed to have two instincts, the hunger and the hiding. And this one had controlled the hunger on her first feeding. She was almost too good. So many of them, if they lasted the first night, went mad trying to live with their new senses. One night and he had to send them to hell with a snap of the neck and a fare-thee-well. But not this one. She had made him laugh; afraid of a few mortals whom she could crush like insects. Perhaps she was protecting her new servant. Perhaps he should kill the boy, just to watch her reaction. Perhaps, but not yet. Some other fly in her ointment then. Just to keep the game going. It felt so good to laugh after so long. Chapter 10 Walking, Talking, and Bumping in the Night Coit Tower jutted out of Telegraph Hill like a giant phallus. Impressive as it was, all lit up and overlooking the City, it made Tommy feel nervous, inferior, and pressured to perform. She had as much as admitted that she was going to take him to bed – had even offered to solve the problem of the Wongs. She was a dream come true. It scared the hell out of him. She took his hand and looked out over the City. â€Å"It’s pretty, isn’t it. We’re lucky it’s a clear night.† â€Å"Your hand is freezing,† he said. He put his arm around her and pulled her close. God, I’m smooth, he thought, a complete stud. I’m making a move on an older woman – an older woman with money. Now what? My arm is lying on her shoulder like a dead fish. I’m a geek. If I could just turn my mind off until it’s all over. Just get shit-faced and do it. No, not that. Not again. Jody stiffened. She thought: I’m not cold. I haven’t been cold since I changed, nor warm, for that matter. Kurt used to say I was always cold. How strange. I can see the heat around Tommy but there’s none around me. â€Å"Feel my forehead,† she said to Tommy. Tommy said, â€Å"Jody, we don’t have to do this if you’re not ready. I mean, maybe, like you said, we should just be roommates. I don’t want to pressure you.† â€Å"No, feel my forehead and see if I have a fever.† â€Å"Oh.† He put his hand on her forehead. â€Å"You’re as cold as ice. Do you feel okay?† Oh my God! How could I have been so stupid? She tore away from him and began pacing. The guy outside her apartment, the laughing man on Kearny Street, he had been cold. And so was she. How many vampires were out there that she hadn’t seen? â€Å"What’s the matter?† Tommy asked. â€Å"Did I say something wrong?† I’ve got to tell him, she thought. He’s not going to trust me if I keep it from him. She took his hand again. â€Å"Tommy, I think you ought to know. I’m not exactly what I seem to be.† He stepped back. â€Å"You’re a guy, aren’t you? I knew it. The total score that we registered as a team was considerably low. Our group had a total score of 56%. I suffered from poor health most of the time, but then I still managed to record a relatively high score of 71%. The score was far much better than that of most of my team members who were of good health during the entire exercise. Anyone would therefore point a figure towards the leadership that we had. In the first case, our leader failed to define goals that he wanted the group members to achieve. In every organization, a team leader is tasked with the responsibility of setting goals for the team (Jones, Caroline, Pound, Linda, 2008). He or she then leads the team in ensuring that the goals are achieved as a team. This was however not the case during our simulation exercise. We never had any set goals to be achieved at the end. Group members can't be productive in a situation whereby they have not been informed about the intention of the work. Failure to set goals by the team leader creates unfair competition among group members. We simply concentrated on our assigned areas of duty. Besides, the group leader should never tire at any given time. A team leader is a manager and should never discourage a member of the team (Aybars Oztuna, 2017). When four of my team members and I started the climbing journey at the foot of the mountain, all of us were very healthy. However, my health deteriorated along the way as temperatures dropped. At some point, my health became critical. I was coughing, and I had to take a rest so that I could recover. Doris who was a physician stayed behind alongside me. He gave me an inhaler. Meanwhile, the other three members of our team moved on to the next campsite. We only joined them once my health had i mproved. We also had to order for the rescue of the marathoner at some point when he attempted to make it to the summit of the mountain. At one given time, the physician had to stay behind with me so that I could take some rest from the journey. Meanwhile, we resolved that the rest of the team members could continue with the journey to the next stage. During the rest, the physician gave me an inhaler. That was enough evidence that my group members were not only concerned about accomplishing their objective, but they were also concerned about my health condition and wellbeing. The social responsibility that was exercised by my colleagues improved my performance. The physician offered medication to me whenever I was unwell. I, therefore, managed to perform my environmental duty and attained a score of 71%. Were it not for the goodwill of my team members; I would have never made it to the top of the mountain. The social responsibility also enabled us to work as a team without divisions. Our team's performance was therefore greatly improved as a result. Reflection of Everest simulation experience Following the simulation exercise, I learned that management demands participation of all the people in the team. Team members are specialized in different areas. The absence of a single team member is likely to hinder the success of the team. The team manager must, therefore, be in a position to coordinate all the members of the team so that they can work for a common goal (Regine Barth Franziska Wolff, 2009). Also, proper management requires consideration of ethics and social responsibility. The learning experience has emphasized what I have learned from management during class lectures. The fact that I was taught in lectures regarding management was finally put into practice during the simulation exercise. I came to appreciate the benefits that come with good management and failure that are likely to arise should there be poor management. From my own experience of participating in the simulation exercise of climbing Mount Everest, I learned a few insights about management. I learned that management is not a one person a fair. A team leader must seek the opinion of all the team members before concluding. I also learned that the success of a team depends on the individual contributions of all the team members. The team members must, therefore, be treated with the dignity that they deserve (Hopkins, 2012). These new insights have changed my learning from traditional teachings because I have personally experienced their benefits. The traditional teachings were simply theoretical. Traditional teachings describe a manger as an individual who holds the entire mandate of the organization or team in his arms (Mallin, 2009). He makes personal decisions without consulting the rest of the team members. The rest of the team members are therefore reduced to a mere subordinate. They are viewed as people who are there to work and offer services but not to take part in decision-making (Schwartz, 2011). However, the simulation exercise has taught me otherwise. Following the exercise, I can confirm that the teachings that we were accorded during lectures have not gone in vain. Many states have laws that require local pounds to turn over those animals who have not been claimed with in five days of their arrival to laboratories. This practice is called pound seizure. The animals, which consist of cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies, are used in medical experiments. There is no federal law related to pound seizure, but there have been several anti-pound seizure bills put before Congress. None have been enacted. Animal advocates strongly object to the practice of pound seizure. An animal that may have once been a loving family member is forced to have its life ended in a laboratory. The Associated Press reported in December of 1995 that two-thirds of 1,004 Americans polled agree that an animals right to live free of suffering should be just as important as a persons right to live free of suffering. Americans should stand up for what they believe and make the world a better place for animals. A complete count of animals used in research is unknown because federal laws do not require research institutes to record the number of rats, mice, and cold blooded animals that are used in experimentation. Estimates for total numbers range from 20 million to 70 million. So why are so many defenseless animals killed? Section I - Quality Education The fundamental question asked concerns education in the 21st century and challenges both future appropriateness of the educational system and its delivery. In reality, the 21st century is something we know very little about, as we are only just 10 years into this century and the new millennium. The future is unknown and therefore one can only forecast, project and extrapolate as to what might be, based on what is already know. Ideology in education is a n evolutionary process. Dominant views on education have influenced teachers for decades. For example, goals to provide equal opportunities and use of young people as a resource for the nation were initiated in from post-war years up to the early 1970s as part of economic expansion. Similarly, the Plowden Report supported child-centred teaching methods to focus on the unique development of each child, becoming known as ‘progressivism’. This ideology is Liberal Romanticism, which also values diversity and individual difference. In the early to mid-1970s, standards were said to have regressed (‘Black Papers’) because curriculum design and organization lacked rigor. In response, the ideology of Educational Conservatism was introduced which emphasized â€Å"the transmission of established social values, knowledge and culture through a subject-orientated approach,† as stated by Pollard & Tann (1990 p 40). The good teacher would reflect on such ideologies and extract ‘the wheat from the chaff’ to improve his own approach to teaching. While such pragmatic values seem promising in theory, the reality of the situation is such that teacher training and curriculum development must develop more objective means of understanding. While the good teacher should have a thirst for continual improvement, this best occurs within an objective framework. As previously mentioned, I personally self-assess my own performance at the end of each lesson. If a lesson has been observed or I have been using classroom assistants, I actively seek their constructive criticism, as I want to be become not only a good teacher but a first class one. Such self-reflexivity is best supplemented with the university model. Pollard & Tann (1990 p 14) state â€Å"practical experience and related discussions at university seem to be more powerful influences for PGCE students on their professional development than their subject studies.† In attempting to become a first class teacher, I found this to be consistently accurate. I am always willing to learn from experienced professionals and lectures. When not teaching, I use the time to observe others to learn valuable experiences. United Nations Peacekeeping Figures Not Available â€Å"The United Nations is so radically defective that it is incapable of establishing world order; truth be told, not only has the UN failed [to achieve its peacekeeping objectives], but it was always bound †¦ to fail† (Simioni 12). At first sight, it would seem that this is part of just one of the many current debates about the effectiveness of the UN as the main arbitrator of the international community. In fact, it represents one of the view points expressed in August 1947, soon after the failure of the first and only round of negotiations concerning the establishment of a transnational army under direct UN command (DEA 33). Since then, the controversy about the role of the United Nations in maintaining global security has remained an ever-current issue, with prominent political personalities contesting the reliability, and even the underlying principles of such an organization. In spite of the never-diminishing criticism, the UN remains a key player on the global ar ena, the only truly representative spokesperson for an increasingly complex assembly of peace-seeking nations. Moreover, ever since its establishment in 1945, the United Nations has achieved notable successes in promoting world peace, by delivering efficient peacekeeping and peacemaking operations, by diversifying its conflict-prevention measures, and by maintaining an equidistant and impartial position towards combatant parties. These standards have been considered essential in assessing the effectiveness of the UN throughout its existence. The neutral stance towards world issues was highly valued by the founders of the organization. Subsequently, former Secretary-General U Thant stated, â€Å"the basis of the UN is the pledge by sovereign states to co-operate†¦ in [efficient] joint missions to alleviate conflicts worldwide†¦ in a responsible and [fair] manner† (qtd. in Schoenberg xi). In later years the trend to broaden peacekeeping initiatives represented Kofi An nan’s main strategy of further enhancing the organization’s ability to cope with new geopolitical developments. Therefore, in evaluating UN successes it is essential to consider both quantitative and qualitative evidence supporting the three above-mentioned criteria. This category is not highly used but is worth noting. Bipolar II disorder is marked by hypo manic episodes that have not required hospitalization. Bipolar I disorder is the full-blown illness and is defined by the presence of manic episodes, which require treatment, and usually hospitalization (Wilner 44). Bipolar disorder can strike at any age but most commonly strikes at age 18 in bipolar I; for bipolar II disorder, the age is 22 (Durand and Barlow 189). The election race in some countries takes just a few weeks, but US presidential candidates undergo a political marathon, negotiating primaries, party conventions and an electoral college system along the way. The primary is the first step in choosing a partys presidential candidate. In most countries, the party picks the candidates. But in US, voters who declare support for one party or another get to choose from the list of candidates. The candidates, campaigning against other members of the same party, must win enough state primaries to give them a majority of delegates at the party convention in the summer. Some states, such as lowa, use a caucus system rather than primaries to choose their delegates. Whereas in primaries people simply indicate at the ballot box which delegates they support, caucuses (the word derives from an Indian word for a gathering) are more complex and work by selecting delegates through a number of stages. By the stage of the convention, the party normally knows who has won. The delegates from each state formally choose their champion to go forward as presidential candidate. The winning candidate also names a vice-presidential running mate. Policies are refined during the campaign. And there is heavy spending on nationwide television publicity, and there are usually televised debates between the candidates.
